Stupid Study of the Day: Math Makes You Stupid!

The University of Las Vegas has released findings that your poor children are suffering under the strain of compound fractions and isosceles triangles.  The feelings of dreaded anticipation of a math test will ruin children and disrupt their memories.

Math anxiety -- feelings of dread and fear and avoiding math -- can sap the brain's limited amount of working capacity, a resource needed to compute difficult math problems, said Mark Ashcroft, a psychologist at the University of Nevada Los Vegas who studies the problem.

"It turns out that math anxiety occupies a person's working memory," said Ashcroft, who spoke on a panel at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in San Francisco.

Little did you know growing up that your fear over that pop quiz in algebra was limiting your ability to correctly assemble your lego pirate ship.  Unless of course you were one of the fortunate one's.

Worrying about math takes up a large chunk of a person's working memory stores as well, spelling disaster for the anxious student who is taking a high-stakes test.

Stress about how one does on tests like college entrance exams can make even good math students choke. "All of a sudden they start looking for the short cuts," said University of Chicago researcher Sian Beilock.

Although test preparation classes can help students overcome this anxiety, they are limited to students whose families can afford them.

Ding, ding.  There it is.  Math and memory issues only apply to the poor.  Just another reason to feel guilty about not paying teachers enough money to raise everyone's children.

Also, was the availability, costs, and subsidizing of test preparation classes studied?

Update:  Check out these math problems at the link below.  Too funny.

Parade Float Offends Muslims In Germany

During the carnival parade in Germany, one float stood out and insulted the Muslims.  While it may be in bad taste, it certainly made me laugh.

You're not seeing double.  The float contains both identical figures with a note on the right labeled, the cliche, and a note on the left, the reality.  Referring to Muslims and specifically a mullah.

LGF has more pictures and background.

She Will Never Win South Carolina

Hillary made an insulting trip to South Carolina and patronized/criticized us on our state flag among other things.  Beyond her infantile and ridiculous speech she mentioned the following:

"I think it's going to be hard for any Democrat to carry the state," she said. "The Republican Party is very strong here."

While that may seem to be stating the obvious, its not the strength of the Republican Party that dictates SC, it is the traditional values of our citizens.  She completely insults the values of 70% of the state and instead defers to the "party is strong."  Kankle cop out.  We've voted Dems into the Senate and Governorships when they reflected our values.  It's not the party, it's the values.

Tell us you are going to stay out of our lives, not inflict more taxes on us, that you believe in God, and that you support our troops.  We are simple people down here.  We don't care nor want to pay for your social engineering in the Northeast and New England.  Let the people who choose to live there and pay those outrageous taxes pay for your money pit.

Wow does she set me off.  Stay out of my state!!!!!

Teddy Roosevelt's Immigration Policy Signed Today

Was Teddy a hateful man or a genius?  Probably a genius, but I'm sure he had enforcement issues.

• In 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt signed an immigration act which excluded "idiots, imbeciles, feebleminded persons, epileptics, insane persons" from being admitted to the United States.

Other events that occurred on this date:

• In 1792, President George Washington signed an act creating the U.S. Post Office.

• In 1809, the Supreme Court, in United States v. Peters, ruled the power of the federal government is greater than that of any individual state.

     The first step backwards?

• In 1839, Congress prohibited dueling in the District of Columbia.

     Time to retract.

• In 1987, a bomb blamed on the Unabomber exploded behind a computer store in Salt Lake City, seriously injuring store owner Gary Wright.

$170,000 Still Needed for Columbine Shrine

Running just a little short of the funding, the Columbine Memorial is going forward.  If you would like to contribute a couple dollars, you can contact/send here:

To contribute, contact the Columbine Memorial Fund, c/o Foothills Foundation, P.O. Box 621788, Littleton, CO, 80162- 1788.

Construction of a permanent memorial to the victims of the Columbine High School slayings bogged down because of winter weather, but the man overseeing the project said he still hopes for completion this summer.

"We haven't been able to work for about the past month because of the snow and the mud," said Bob Easton, chairman of the Columbine Memorial Committee. "With the delays, we are looking at July, possibly August, of this year for completion and dedication. That just depends on what happens with the weather."

The memorial will commemorate the 12 students and a teacher killed in the April 20, 1999, rampage by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who took their own lives the same day.

But the memorial committee remains about $170,000 short of the $1.5 million needed to complete the memorial, which is being built on a one-acre parcel at the park.

"We are still working on some in-kind things, but we still need $167,000," Easton said. "We will be rolling out a campaign toward that sometime in the next month or so."

The memorial fund has collected about $200,000 since former President Clinton pledged a $50,000 contribution when he spoke at a June groundbreaking ceremony.

Freedom Tower Funding Due to be Announced Today

While it would be nice to rebuild the original towers, at least there might be some good news in the progress of The Freedom Tower today.

Image Preview(CBS/AP) NEW YORK State leaders are looking at new private investors and budget cuts to help pay for the multibillion-dollar effort to build office towers, a 9/11 memorial and a huge transit hub at Ground Zero.

Gov. Eliot Spitzer was scheduled to make an announcement Tuesday about financing for the Freedom Tower, a planned 1,776-foot office tower under construction since last April.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owned the destroyed World Trade Center and is building the Freedom Tower, has been recently solicited by private investors for ownership and development rights to the skyscraper and a second tower under the authority's control, officials said.

It was unclear how any announcement would affect the building's budget -- $2.4 billion for construction -- its design or federal and state commitments to lease about half the tower's office space.

It's Time To Withdraw From New Orleans

The violence and chaos of New Orleans has continued since August of 2005.  Police and National Guard have been ineffective with terrible leadership.  The city should be abandoned in order to let the citizens and the local government deal with issues.  How much longer can the state and federal government pour resources into a city that has no intention of recovering.

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - New Orleans, the "Big Easy" city famous for its good times and relaxed attitude, has become the Big Uneasy in recent weeks as its murder count has soared and anger grown at local leaders unable to stop the violence.

Annual Mardi Gras celebrations unfolded without incident this weekend, but fear of the rampant blood-spilling and its threat to the city's recovery from Hurricane Katrina are constant topics of conversation.

The homicide total for a still-young 2007 climbed to 27 on Saturday with the dead of a man shot at a nightclub on Friday.

He was one of nine people shot in separate incidents in a seven-hour span on Thursday and Friday, and the third of them to die.

Local leaders, worried crime may scare away tourists who are the life-blood of the economy, stressed that the shootings did not take place at Mardi Gras events and assured visitors violent crime is largely restricted to "hot spots," or impoverished neighborhoods where visitors seldom go.

"The truth is that crime traditionally has gone down during Mardi Gras," Mardi Gras historian Arthur Hardy said.

New Orleans has had one of the United States' highest per-capita murder rates for years, but the current violence has added to insecurities in a city worried about its future.

Only about 200,000 of the pre-Katrina population of 480,000 is back and much of the city is still damaged and abandoned. Recent news stories have said a growing number of those who returned are leaving because they are fed up with the slow recovery and the crime.

"If they don't get crime under control, if they can't convince people it's safe to be here, it doesn't matter how much money they get from the federal government, nobody's going to stay," Tulane University criminal justice instructor Ronnie Jones said.

Birmingham Throws Homeless Out of Their, er Homes

Isn't this what Guiliani was ripped for when he was mayor in New York?

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The city of Birmingham is set to enforce a new no trespassing law, which will make it illegal for anyone to live under bridges, interstates and viaducts.

Like many times before, the recent cold weather pushed up efforts to help out Birmingham’s homeless. This time, however, those leading the charge have the most in common with those they are helping.

Efforts were led by those currently living in the local firehouse shelter who are searching for those with situations similar to their own.

From Highway 280 to Richard Arrington Jr. Drive, they made the rounds under bridges and interstates on Monday. They handed out comfort kits and blankets and picked up trash. Their goal is to help those who can't make it inside.

Workers expected to help over 100 people in the sweep. City crews will now make the rounds, picking up trash that was gathered by crews Monday.

The efforts were sparked by complaints from the business community. Birmingham will continue to look for permanent housing for the displaced homeless.

Outrageous!  Just give them soup and shopping carts.  You're not allowed to tell people how to live, or give them a chance at a better life.

Expect the
World Socialist Club to Jump on this the same way they did in New York.  In fact, didn't Rosie jump on Rudy for this as well?

Iran Falls Behind on Nuke Payments to Russia

Perhaps it's the inflation, unemployment, or the generally crappy economy of Iran that has caused them to fall behind on their Nuke payments.

Russia says Iran is behind in payments for nuclear plant

MOSCOW If Iran doesn't get a nuclear power plant up and running, it could be because it hasn't kept up the payments on it.

Russian officials say the launch of a nuclear power plant built by Russia in Iran could be delayed because Iran is falling behind in payments.

But top Iranian officials deny it.

It's the latest dispute over the deal that's at the heart of relations between Russia and Iran.

Last year, Russia agreed to ship nuclear fuel to the facility by March of this year, and to launch the facility in September. Power generation would start by November.

Under a separate deal, Iran agreed to send back to Russia all of the spent fuel from the plant, so that Russia could reprocess it.

A Russian official says Iran broke the schedule of payments this year. He says Iran blames the delay on the need to switch payments from dollars to euros.

Hallmark Introduces Cancer Cards: Others Suggested

Can't find the right thing to say to your friend with Lung Cancer?  Deciding how to influence someone considering adoption?  Hallmark to the rescue.

Hallmark Cards Inc. has launched a new line of greeting cards called "Journeys."

The company took about a year to develop the new line of cards, spokeswoman Deidre Parkes said Monday. Hallmark isn't disclosing how much revenue it hopes the new line to generate, she said.

The collection of 176 cards is designed to offer support to people in a variety of real-life situations, the company said in a release. Those situations could include a loved one diagnosed with cancer, a family member considering adoption after years of infertility and a friend who has met a weight-loss goal.

"We saw a huge need for cards covering a large emotional range, from sharing grief to celebrating the joy of recovery," Cynthia Musick, editorial director for Journeys, said in the release. "When we started talking to people, they told us they needed cards for events that really do happen in life. This is the 'new normal' in which we live. Basically, they gave us permission to talk about these specific, sometimes scary life moments."

Other real life events that already have cards:

Butch-lesbian nativist Laine Lawless loves incinerating Mexico's flag.

That is not my title, but one that caught my eye as well.  Look at the description of this anti-illegal immigration workhorse.

With her silver power-mullet, support hose, and ankle-length leopard-print skirt, Laine Roberta Lawless is a cross between Ma Barker, Dog the Bounty Hunter, and South Park school-bus driver Mrs. Crabtree (minus the bird in her hair). Actually, Lawless, 57, is more like the Carrie Nation of the anti-illegal-immigration movement, but instead of smashing up bars with a hatchet like the temperance battle-ax of yore, Lawless' shtick is barbecuing Mexican flags.

Which is what she did last December 16 in front of the Mexican consulate in Phoenix, but not until she had finished her megaphone-enhanced diatribe about the hordes of illegals invading this country.

"This foreign infestation has grown to the point where the illegals among us victimize an American citizen every 17 seconds," she spewed to an assemblage of curiosity-seekers, counterprotesters, and more than a few of Phoenix's finest in plainclothes. (Lawless later admits that the foreign-infestation factoid is the concoction of a confederate, a "distillation" of disparate sources.)

There was tittering in the crowd as she continued her gas-bagging about Americans being the unwitting prey of the brown tide.

"Mexico actively promotes illegal immigration and routinely interferes with the internal affairs of the United States," she read from a black notebook in her left hand, as her bearded buddy, Don Pauly of the Emigration Party of Nevada, held signs touting anti-immigrant stats and advertising Lawless' self-produced DVD, How to Burn a Mexican Flag. "This is an outrage! Why are more American citizens not joining with me here today to protect American sovereignty?"

A girl's voice cried out from the crowd, "Because you're a racist nut!"

Lawless paused to let the laughter die down. Photogs snapped away. Lawless persevered, at one point yelling to a group of men across the street that included Rusty Childress, owner of the Childress auto mall in Phoenix and a well-known anti-illegal-immigration booster who hosts a regular Thursday-night meeting for like-minded folks at his Kia dealership. Childress was videotaping the event from a distance, refusing to join Lawless and Pauly, which pissed off Lawless big-time.

"I want to know what's the matter with the men of Phoenix," she barked. "Aren't your balls big enough to stand here with me and burn the Mexican flag?"

The answer was, apparently, not. Childress, et al., did not cross the street and help out. So Lawless resumed her rant.

"We are asked who will pick our vegetables, who will do your landscaping, and who will clean your toilets," Lawless screeched. "My response to that is, 'We will!' I don't have a problem cleaning my own toilet. I do it every week."

Reaching across geo-political lines to engage average Americans on the issues.

Extract of Pig Bladder Regrows Fingers/Limbs

Despite the great news and scientific advances that can come from this, the first thing I thought of is what has been tried in the past.  Forget Stem Cells, did the bird droppings, kankle fat, or ground yellow toe nail shavings have any effect?  Is it taken orally?

NEW YORK - Researchers are trying to find ways to regrow fingers — and someday, even limbs — with tricks that sound like magic spells from a Harry Potter novel.

There's the guy who sliced off a fingertip but grew it back, after he treated the wound with an extract of pig bladder. And the scientists who grow extra arms on salamanders. And the laboratory mice with the eerie ability to heal themselves.

This summer, scientists are planning to see whether the powdered pig extract can help injured soldiers regrow parts of their fingers. And a large federally funded project is trying to unlock the secrets of how some animals regrow body parts so well, with hopes of applying the the lessons to humans.

The implications for regrowing fingers go beyond the cosmetic. People who are missing all or most of their fingers, as from an explosion or a fire, often can't pick things up, brush their teeth or button a button. If they could grow even a small stub, it could make a huge difference in their lives.

And the lessons learned from studying regrowth of fingers and limbs could aid the larger field of regenerative medicine, perhaps someday helping people replace damaged parts of their hearts and spinal cords, and heal wounds and burns with new skin instead of scar.

Shocker: Mideast Peace Talks End with no Resolution

Today's AP headline:

Mideast talks end with little progress

I think the AP has a boiler plate article they have used for the last 30-40 years to explain all of the failed attempts to get two groups of people to stop killing each other.  I'll use today's as an example:

JERUSALEM - Talks between Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice [insert U.S. leader] and the Israeli and Palestinian leaders, initially billed as a new U.S. push to restart peace efforts, ended Monday [insert day, date, etc.] with little progress other than a commitment to meet again.

In a 90-second statement following the two-hour meeting, Rice [U.S. Leader] said the three discussed the changed political circumstances arising from a Palestinian power-sharing deal that includes Hamas [terrorist faction of the day] militants.

Now just add: will not recognize Israel, right to return, and fatwa to the "palestinian" position.  And add: stop the suicide bombings and YOU LOST THE WAR(s) to the Israeli side.

Saudi Prince Investing In Tel Aviv:Hell Freezes

I guess when it come to making money; race, religion, discrimination, and ethnic cleansing goes out the window.  I wonder if the investment will make the hotel bullet proof or will Hamas consider the investment a support of the Jews.  In either case, financial investment gives the Prince an incentive to keep the city free or death and full of visitors.

Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal is in negotiations to build a hotel on Tel Aviv's coastline.

Two architects have already started working on the project. The one is Bin Talal's private architect, who had worked with him on oriental hotels across the world, Basel al-Beiti. The other is former Tel Aviv Chief City Engineer, Yisrael Gudovich.

The planned project is a joint venture with the Abulafya family, which owns a structure on a 1-acre plot on Herbert Samuel Street.

According to the blueprints submitted to the Tel Aviv Municipality, an eight-story, 150-room hotel is planned to be built on the site.

Bin Talal is the nephew of the late Saudi King Faisal, and is believed to be worth $26.4 billion.

The prince's empire includes holdings in banks, financing and investment firms, hi-tech and communications companies, leading hotels in the United States, Europe and the Arab world, and tourist sites.
